Cinnamon Roll Apple Cheesecake Skillet
The formula

Ingredients

Skillet base

  • 1 tsp softened butter, for the skillet
  • 1 tube (12.4 oz / 350 g) refrigerated cinnamon rolls, 8 rolls, with its icing packet
  • 1 large apple, peeled, cored, and diced into ¼-inch pieces
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp water

Cheesecake ribbon

  • 4 oz (115 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

10-inch oven-safe skillet at least 2 inches deep, mixer, foil

Allergens and ingredient notes: Milk, wheat, egg; check cinnamon-roll package ingredients.

The process

Step by step

  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease the skillet with the 1 tsp butter. In a small pan melt the separate 1 tbsp butter, then add apple, brown sugar, cinnamon, and water. Cook 5–7 minutes until the apple is almost tender and the liquid has evaporated. Cool 5 minutes.
  2. Beat cream cheese with granulated sugar, yolk, and vanilla until smooth. Set the included icing packet aside for the finish.
  3. Arrange the eight uncooked rolls in the skillet with small gaps between them. Divide all cooled apple into the gaps. Spoon the cheesecake mixture in narrow ribbons between and slightly over the rolls; avoid a thick blanket that would prevent them baking through.
  4. Bake for 30–38 minutes, tenting loosely with foil after 20 minutes if the tops brown quickly. The middle rolls must be cooked through, with no gummy dough when gently separated, and the cheesecake ribbon should reach 160°F (71°C). Package directions are a starting point; the added filling can extend baking time.
  5. Rest 15 minutes, then drizzle with the icing from the packet. Cut into eight wedges and serve warm; the skillet handle stays hot.

The Devotti twist: The apples and cheesecake occupy the gaps between the spirals, giving the rolls a creamy filling while keeping their tops exposed to the heat.
