Walnut Maple Manhattan
The formula

Ingredients

Cocktail

  • 2 fl oz rye whiskey
  • 1 fl oz sweet red vermouth
  • ¼ fl oz pure maple syrup
  • 2 dashes walnut bitters
  • 1 cup ice, for stirring

Finish

  • 1 strip orange peel, about 2 inches long
  • 1 drained cocktail cherry

Equipment

Mixing glass, bar spoon, strainer, chilled 6-fl-oz Nick and Nora glass

Allergens and ingredient notes: Alcohol; walnut bitters may contain walnuts or other nuts, and vermouth may contain sulfites. Check each label.

Measurements use US fluid ounces (1 fl oz ≈ 30 mL), tablespoons (tbsp), and teaspoons (tsp). Syrup and tea batches may make extra: use only the cocktail quantity listed. These recipes contain alcohol and are for adults 21 and over.

The process

Step by step

  1. Chill the serving glass in the refrigerator. Add rye, sweet vermouth, maple syrup, and walnut bitters to a mixing glass. Stir briefly before adding ice so the maple dissolves evenly.
  2. Add all the stirring ice and stir for 25–30 seconds, until the mixing glass is very cold and the drink is slightly diluted.
  3. Strain into the chilled glass without serving ice. Squeeze the orange peel gently over the surface to release its oils, then rest it on the rim or place it in the drink. Add the drained cocktail cherry and serve.
  4. Use walnut bitters as listed; walnut liqueur is a different, sweeter ingredient and is not a volume-for-volume substitute.

The Devotti twist: Walnut bitters bring a roasted edge while a small maple measure rounds out the rye rather than turning the drink into syrup.

Make ahead and storage

Mix to order. Keep opened vermouth refrigerated and follow its label for best quality.
